Protection explained simply
Life Insurance
Pays out a lump sum if you die during the policy term. The payout can be used to repay the mortgage, so your family keeps the home. Most people with a mortgage should have this in place.
From around £10, £20 per month for a healthy non-smoker in their 30s.
Critical Illness Cover
Pays out a lump sum if you're diagnosed with a serious illness such as cancer, heart attack, or stroke. Gives you financial breathing room when you need it most whether that's to repay debt or adapt your home.
Often combined with life insurance for better value.
Income Protection
Replaces a percentage of your income (typically 50 to 70%) if you can't work due to illness or injury. This is the most underused cover in the UK but arguably the most important, especially if you're self-employed.
Particularly important for self-employed clients with no employer sick pay.
Most people are underinsured
The UK has a significant protection gap. Many people assume they're covered through work, or that the state will support them but the reality is often very different.
Debbie will look at what you already have in place through work or existing policies and only recommend what genuinely fills a gap.
Review my cover →Already have cover through work?
Group life and income protection through an employer disappears the moment you change jobs. Personal policies travel with you.
The best time to arrange cover
When you're young and healthy premiums are significantly lower, and you don't have to declare conditions you haven't been diagnosed with yet.
We review what you have first
Debbie never recommends cover just to sell it. She'll check your existing policies, identify any gaps, and give you an honest recommendation.
Protection FAQs
Do I need protection if I have savings?
Savings help, but a serious illness or long period off work can exhaust even significant savings quickly. Protection is there for the worst-case scenarios your savings might not cover.
What's the difference between life insurance and critical illness?
Life insurance pays out when you die. Critical illness pays out when you're diagnosed with a specified serious condition while you're still alive. They serve different purposes and many people have both.
Is income protection worth it if I'm employed?
Check your employer sick pay policy carefully. How long would they pay you? After that, you'd be on statutory sick pay only. If your mortgage payment relies on your income, income protection bridges that gap.
Can I get cover if I have a health condition?
Often yes, though the condition may be excluded from the policy or the premium may be higher. Debbie works with specialist insurers who can often still find suitable cover.
